Winning at the Awards ( I didn’t).

My escort!

My escort!

The Irish Blog Awards, what a great night! I knew I wouldn’t win – sure look who I was sharing a category with! As far as I was concerned, Parent.ie had the award in the bag. It turns out they didn’t – ‘Tara Sparling Writes‘ won in the ‘Best Newcomer’ category. The anticipation, the really wanting to win it when they got to our round, and the moment of ‘aw well’ that followed aside, I had an absolutely fantastic night! I am still on a high from the fact that I was a finalist, so thank you judges and readers for getting me and my little blog to the glittering affair that was last Saturday night. The finalist badge to the right will be keeping it’s pride of place!

From the moment we arrived (my husband escorted me for the evening) the atmosphere was fantastic – how Lorna and Amanda managed to create such a warm and welcoming atmosphere in a crowd of strangers is absolutely beyond me. One of the first people I met was the familiar face of Miss Beausang,vice-principal of my children’s school (but I was allowed call her Mary for the night ;)) who was nominated for our school blog in the education category. After a chat with her, I was feeling well settled and ready for the night. In fact, my hidden agenda was to finally put faces to the many names I was so familiar with from the Irish Parenting Bloggers.

I arrived into the bar and after a swift gin and tonic did a scan – there was a group of ladies in the near centre of the room chatting 19 to the dozen and I figured that must be them; besides, I recognised Office Mum‘s dress from a previous on-line conversation! So, like the grown up that I am, I took a deep breath, approached them, and introduced myself. I was made to feel immediately welcome, and just as introductions and all the ‘oh you’re her’s!’ were done it was time for dinner. We moved into the dining room and because of the powerhouse that is the IPB there was not enough room at two tables for us, so we spread onto three.

The Goodie Bag

The Goodie Bag

My husband Paul and I along with Debbie and James of the wonderful Saucepankids nabbed ourselves a couple of seats together, checked out our brilliant goodie bags and spent the rest of the evening yakking and cheering on every category that the IPB was nominated in. At one stage Belfast Dad‘s name was called out and I yelled across the table at Debbie (a lady I had only met) ‘he is one of ours!’, with a pride probably only matched by his own parents. IPB had a few wins too, Dolly Rouge (beauty), Sunny Spells And Scattered Showers (health and wellbeing) Mamadotie (parenting) and Beating Myself into a Dress (best blog post). Even if we had not won, I can’t imagine anything putting a dampner on Saturday night. I think Lisa Healy deserves a special mention as she is the brains behind IPB, a group I am glad, nay proud to be a member of.

As for the Blog Awards 2015, I had better get my game face on because next year, I really will be competing in the big league that is the parenting category! However, even if I don’t make it to the finals, I am definitely going along for the party! For now though I am happy as can be with how far Babysteps has come since February! πŸ™‚

Thanks, I think this is probably the first time I have not been too disappointed at not winning something. It really was a lovely evening and I was thrilled to be a finalist!

Lovely post Aisling. You captured the warmth and the welcome of the Blog Awards so well. Thank you for giving the school blog a mention. I must admit to being envious that you met the Saucepan Kids as I know their blog as it has an association with another Sligo based blog that teachers love Seomra Ranga. With every good wish
